Meet new CliMAS faculty member: Shiv Priyam Raghuraman
Professor Raghuraman comes to the University of Illinois from the University of Miami and the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), where he was a postdoc researcher focusing on climate issues. His research is on radiative forcing and feedbacks and clouds. Why does he find that so appealing? “I like that these topics can be distilled into basic physical principles and have many unanswered questions. Our answers to these questions will have far-reaching impacts on our understanding of global warming and climate change. I hope to accomplish better predictions of the fate of our climate. My teaching interests are on similar topics: climate change, atmospheric radiation, and climate and clouds.”
He is a graduate of Princeton University and the University of Minnesota (which we won’t hold against him). Staying in the Big 10, what drew him to apply to the University of Illinois? “…it is a world-class university that has terrific students and this department's atmospheric sciences research, and teaching is cutting-edge.”
Now that he has landed in the cornfields, what does he hope to accomplish at CliMAS? “I am looking forward to researching the governing mechanisms of Earth's climate and how it responds to human influences. The interaction of clouds, aerosols, and greenhouse gases with Earth's climate requires our urgent attention because changes in these constituents perturb the planetary radiation balance that alters the entire climate system.”
We welcome Professor Raghuraman and look forward to his working and teaching our students.
