The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Graduate College and Department offers selected fellowships to students, typically upon entering the program, but also to students already enrolled and completing their program.

DEPARTMENT FELLOWSHIPS

BLOCK GRANT FELLOWSHIP

Through an award from the Graduate College, and a supplement from internal funds, the Department of Atmospheric Sciences offers a 9-month fellowship to an outstanding new graduate student. The monetary amount is equal to that of an incoming RA stipend.

EXCEPTIONAL MERIT FELLOWSHIP

Provide recognition of incoming graduate students of exceptional merit, in the amount of $5000 given as a one-time bonus.

PRIVATE SECTOR FELLOWSHIP

A fellowship may be paid from internal funds to support an MS or PhD student working in the private sector and is not supported by an RA or TA. This fellowship is in the amount of $5000 and is a one time payment.

GRADUATE COLLEGE FELLOWSHIPS

The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign has several graduate fellowships available for prospective and current students.  The listing of fellowships is available here: https://grad.illinois.edu/fellowship/competitions

OTHER FELLOWSHIPS

If students are awarded an external fellowship that is less than the monetary value of the pay rate of a research assistant in their stage of academic progression, it is the policy of the department to "top-up" the pay rate to the equivalent rate they would earn as a research assistant.  This applies to fellowships such as those from US Government Funding Agencies (NASA, DOE, NSF) but also international fellowships, such as Fulbright Fellowships.
