The non-thesis option is intended for students who wish to pursue careers in education, applied meteorology, computer applications in meteorology, or other areas within atmospheric science not specifically tied to research. The non-thesis option is not intended for students who wish to pursue a Ph.D. degree afterward. Students who complete the non-thesis M.S. option and later wish to enter the ATMS Ph.D. program will be required to reapply for admission to the Department following standard University procedures.
Course requirements
Students selecting the non-thesis option complete 32 hours: 4 of the 6 core courses (16 hours), plus 16 hours of additional graduate-level courses in ATMS or approved courses in another discipline. At least one of those courses (4 credits) must be an approved quantitative/analytical course. Course selections are subject to approval by the student’s advisor.

Students who wish to include research credit may enroll in ATMS 596 Non-Thesis Research, which is restricted to students in the non-thesis options. No more than 8 hours of ATMS 596 may be counted toward the M.S. degree.
Seminar
Giving a departmental seminar is not required for this option.
